At a recent wedding shower that I planned and facilitated on Zoom, a guest shared her thoughts on the phrase "Happy Wife, Happy Life." She had been reflecting on its implications and found it to be a bit self-centered. Instead, she offered a refreshing perspective: the more you practice being generous in your love for your husband, the happier you’ll be. She also referenced St. Thomas Aquinas, who defined love as "wanting the good of the other person." This means striving for whatever is truly best for your husband.
She expressed these ideas more eloquently than I can capture here, but seven years into marriage, I deeply appreciated the reminder. Marriage isn’t about seeking my own happiness; it’s about loving my husband generously. For me, this translates into small commonplace actions: taking on the shared chores he dislikes, cooking the meals he enjoys, and generously giving him my full attention and a smile when he walks into the room.
No matter where you are in your marriage journey, remember to love generously.
